Lady Cycs dump Lawrence in opener

MERRY HILL — With the transition of sophomore Abigail Jackson into the middle, the Community Christian School varsity girls basketball team siphoned off the primary source of offense for host Lawrence Academy in propelling the Lady Cyclones to a 40-22 season-opening victory Monday night.

The Lady Cyclones of second-year head coach Kenneth Atkinson led 21-15 at halftime and pulled away into a double-digit margin entering the fourth quarter. Atkinson cited the move of Jackson from a guard position into the middle as key as Lawrence crept to within two possessions at halftime by getting the ball inside.

Senior Logan Vaughan led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds as senior Olivia Walker, at times the sole scoring threat for CCS last season, netting 11.

Abby Lenhart, a third senior, tallied seven points and nine rebounds.

“One of the things helping us out is that we are shooting better — and shooting more,” Atkinson said. “We’re getting more quality shots and moving the ball a lot more, not depending on one person to do most of the shooting.”

Emma Cobb’s eight points led Lawrence Academy of the 1-A Tarheel Independent Conference.

CCS opens 1-A Mid-Carolina Conference play Thursday against Lee Christian at Peace Church.
