The Spartans hosted Halifax Academy on Friday evening, pulling out the victory on a last second three-pointer from Ronnie Broadie. The rest of the contest wasn’t nearly as pretty as Broadie’s buzzer-beater, which found nothing but net.
A win is a win, even if it’s ugly. That is what Spartans’ coach Taron Downey was thinking after the victory.
“Some games are not pretty, and we are just lucky to come out with a win at the end,” Downey said.
Downey was disappointed with the intensity his squad showed for most of the game.
“We took them lightly and they brought the fight to us,” Downey said. “I may need to motivate them differently.”
Both teams came out flat and struggled to score, with the Spartans leading 6-4 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter proved no better for the Spartans as Halifax Academy took a 16-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The scoring picked up a bit in the second half but the Spartans continued to struggle with ball handling and turnovers.
“We had way too many turnovers,” Downey said. “It’s tough to beat any team when you keep giving them the ball.”
The lack of intensity also showed up on the defensive end of the court, with Halifax’s Grant Morris scoring 25 of his team’s 42 points.
“We didn’t play their best guy very well,” Downey said. “He did a great job of punishing us for our mistakes. We just didn’t play physical down low and let them pass the ball wherever they wanted.”
Halifax took a 30-27 lead into the fourth quarter, but was unable to hang on.
Kerr-Vance picked up their scoring in the fourth quarter, chipping in more than they did in the entire first half. Most of the quarter went back and forth between the
ultimately outscoring Halifax Academy 18-12 for the three-point victory.
“We couldn’t hit a shot early, and there are going to be games when you don’t hit your shots,” Downey said. “We’ve got to learn to be disciplined when that happens and continue to run our offense, but a win is a win.”
Wil Short led the Spartans with 17 points, followed by Broadie who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Branson Hight and Colby Wilkerson each scored four points for Kerr-Vance, with Dustin Smith adding three, and Daniel Wilkerson scoring two.
The Spartans take almost a week off before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 18 in their holiday tournament.
