GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
OAKWOOD 48, KERR-VANCE 40
The Lady Spartans (1-2) dropped a tough 48-40 decision to visiting Oakwood Friday evening in conference play.
Both teams had trouble hitting shots early on in the game, with the score tied at 7-7 after the first quarter of play. The Spartans seemed to lose momentum in the second quarter, with Oakwood taking what seemed like an insurmountable 15 point lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Lady Spartans proved resilient, however, scrapping their way back into the game in the second half. Kerr-Vance eventually cut Oakwood’s lead down to single digits, but could never quite catch their opponents from Greenville.
“We just couldn’t shut down Oakwood’s top player, Bianca Lockamy, who scored 30 for them,” Spartans’ head coach Sandy Ross said. “But I was pleased with how our team never gave up.”
Kaylee Stevenson led the Spartans in scoring with 10 points on the night, followed closely by Kennedy Adcock (8) and Bonnie Evans (8). Emma Pelfrey and Lorena Negron each added six points for the Spartans, while Ashley Dickerson rounded out the scoring with two points of her own.
The Spartans return to action Monday night when they travel to face local rival Oxford Prep in a nonconference matchup.
