GOLDSBORO — Erasing an eight-point deficit and tying the game in the last two minutes was not enough of feat to rescue the visiting Greenfield School varsity boys basketball team Friday night.

Marcus Metcalf completed a three-point play after hitting a jump shot with 0.8 seconds remaining and Wayne Country Day emerged with a 64-61 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference victory.

The Knights were dealt their first conference loss after four wins and dropped to 15-8 overall. Chargers head coach David Flowers, in his third season, celebrated his first conquest of a Greenfield team coached by Rob Salter. Flowers was Salter’s assistant at Greenfield before becoming the head coach at Community Christian School, then WCD.

The Knights attempt to regroup for Saturday afternoon’s home encounter at 4 against The Burlington School, undefeated and No. 1-ranked among North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A programs.

“You don’t look ahead when its Greenfield and Wayne Country Day,” Salter declared. “We didn’t play good enough to win.

“Greenfield and Wayne Country Day always play hard and both teams played their hearts out. We did a terrific job of tying the game. But they had the ball for the final possession — and won it.

Salter pointed out the Knights connected on just 4 of 23 attempts from 3-point range, and were without the services of Cedric Kirby (back injury) and Octavius Lacey (meniscus surgery). Elijah McCadden, a 6-foot-5 junior, returned after missing the previous game, but was limited to eight points.

Coby White, also a 6-5 junior, blistered the nets for 39 points for Greenfield. Dorieon Suggs, a 6-4 senior, added 12.

Sophomore Jamal King paced the Chargers with 26 points. Jimmy Sanders netted 12, Cole Atwood 11 and Metcalf 10.

“We were very passive against their zone,” Salter lamented. “They deserved it.”
