The Burlington School’s 54-game winning streak ends in semifinal loss

CARY — The Burlington School lost to Trinity Christian 46-38 in the semifinals of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A state playoffs in boys’ basketball Friday night, snapping the Spartans’ 54-game win streak that dated back to last season.

“We had a great season,” coach Ron Johnson said. “It’s always tough to lose and have your season ended, but we will bounce back for next season. We couldn’t quite the job done, but I’m proud of my team and the season that we had.”

John Meeks was the only player to score in double figures for The Burlington School (34-1). Meeks scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Jordan Nelson tallied eight rebounds.

The Spartans had a tough time shooting the ball, hitting 14-for-52 from the floor, including only 2-for-21 from behind the 3-point line.

Meeks and teammate T.J. Jeffers were named to the all-state team.

Trinity Christian (12-14) was led by Joey Baker’s 13 points. Mike Boykin added 10 points for the Crusaders, who grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and converted many of them into points.
