Trinity girls win 1-A state title

• Eighth grader Alex Scruggs leads the way with a school-record 46 points.

A staff report

ASHEVILLE
- The hot shooting of Trinity Christian's Alex Scruggs, who had a school-record 46 points, and a cold start for top-seeded Oakwood School helped Trinity's girls to an 83-68 win in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A girls' basketball championship game Saturday.

Scruggs' 46 points was the highest single-game total in the championship game since the NCISAA went to its current playoff format in 2004. Officials said it is possibly the highest total ever but they were unable to confirm that pending further research.

The game was played at Asheville School. Trinity finished the season 17-6 while Oakwood suffered only its second loss to wind up 25-2. Trinity was the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Scruggs had 25 points in the first half as Trinity surged to a 28-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

"I was just getting under the basket, trying to foul out their key players,'' she said.

Most of her points came on drives through the heart of the Oakwood defense.

"She's had a double-double in about 10 games this year,'' Trinity coach Charles Tubbs said of Scruggs. "She's done a great job of leading the team this year.''

Tubbs said his big concern with Oakwood was to try and keep guard Bianca Lockamy and post player Kira Williams at bay on the scoring end.

Both were almost silent during Trinity's big first quarter run, only warming up later in the game. Lockamy finished with 29 points and Williams had 19.

Oakwood did manage a rally, cutting the Trinity lead to 60-58 early in the fourth quarter.

"We got a little lazy having the lead,'' Tubbs said. "But we picked it up and did a good job at the end.''

Trinity also was hurt by foul trouble for Corinthia Lindsay, who spent much of the third quarter on the bench but came back for the final quarter to help close off the Trinity interior.

Scruggs scored 14 points in the closing minutes to help Trinity seal the win.

"It's not hard to win when you've got a group of young ladies who will listen to you and work hard for you,'' Tubbs said.

Scruggs, an eighth grader, will head the returning crop of players for next season. Tubbs said his only losses will be seniors Lindsay, Deja Whitlock and Lauren Caldwell.

"From the girls we've got coming back and the middle school girls, we've got a pretty good chance of doing it again next year,'' he said.
