Five in a row

On Friday, the Kerr-Vance Academy boys’ soccer team improved to 7-1
on the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Oxford Prep.
While the win proved to be the fifth in a row for the Spartans, head coach
Devon Honeywell certainly wasn’t jumping for joy when the 80 minutes
of soccer had completed.
“From a mathematical standpoint, yes (I’m happy),” Honeywell said. “It’s
points on the board. But we’re still not doing some of the stuff that we work
on in practice.
“In terms of our finishing, it’s been awful for like three games now. We’ve
been creating tons of chances and the boys are just not finishing the way we
are supposed to. So, that’s kind of worrying me as a coach.”
Kerr-Vance took the lead less than three minutes into Friday’s contest when sophomore Gabriel Carr scored off an assist from Jack Cheever. From there, the teams would go
back and forth without any scoring for the next 24 minutes. Then, Oxford Prep’s Hunter Strickland scored a free kick from just past midfield. Kerr-Vance goalie Jordan Smith tipped
Strickland’s shot, however, the kick was a tad above Smith’s reach for a save.
“That’s something we’ve specifically been working on with (Hunter), and it paid
off,” Oxford Prep head coach Doug Peters said.
The contest was knotted 1-1 at the intermission.Just 90 seconds into the second half, Kerr-Vance senior Joseph Burnette would score off an assist from Max Perry in a goal that resulted being the game-winner.
“I guess I was at the right place at the right time and it put us up by one,” Burnette said of the play. “I just tried to put it away and put it in the back of the net.”
Kerr-Vance’s Evan McGhee scored the game’s final goal with less than five minutes remaining, which would officially erase all hopes of a comeback from the visitors.
“I’m not really interested in the score very much,” Peters said. “Our guys did amazing. We ran the field the first half.“It was on their side more than our side. We had great control. I am very proud of what we did today. No questions. Amazing.”
Burnette said the Spartans game plan didn’t change from the first to second half, but their intensity level did.“We played good in sections,” Burnette said, “but overall I don’t think we played our best game — especially not the first half. The second half we managed to do a
little better.”
Kerr-Vance will be back in action on Tuesday and visit Oakwood, while Oxford Prep won’t see competition again until Sept. 21 when they host KIPP Pride
