From staff reports

The Greenfield School varsity boys soccer juggernaut is just one win away from a North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship in the first season of head coach Eric Nguyen.

The Knights, kingpins of the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, stormed into Saturday’s championship match with an 8-1 rout of No. 4-seeded Grace Christian of Sanford on the Forbes Field pitch Tuesday evening.

Top-seeded Greenfield opposes No. 2 Neuse Christian of Raleigh at Westchester Country Day of High Point on Saturday.

Senior Jackson Stone, in Tuesday’s semifinal, sparked Greenfield with three goals and four assists.

Stone netted his first goal with only 18 seconds elapsed after fielding a through ball from sophomore Sebastian Partida. In the sixth minute, Stone, on a free kick, curled the ball around the right side of the wall and into the back of the net.

In the 10th minute, Stone worked the ball through the defense to junior Zeke Ferrell. Ferrell beat the keeper to the ball, dribbled around the keeper and slotted the ball into the net with his left foot.

The Knights proceeded to a 6-0 halftime cushion.

Junior Eli Ferrell beat a defender, dropped the ball to Stone at the top of the 18-yard box and Stone plays square to Partida. Partida ripped a 20-yard shot past the keeper.

Next, Stone’s shot from some 25 yards out is stopped by the keeper. But eighth-grader Bryson Wall followed, lacing a shot into the lower left corner. Finally in the first half, sophomore William Smith beats two defender and fires a 25-yard bullet into the upper left corner.

The Knights’ lead climbed to 7-1 early in the second half. On a set piece, Stone played the ball to the corner near post and eighth-grader Nathan Lozevski headed it in.

After a Grace Christian penalty kick, the Knights concluded their scoring off Stone’s free kick.

Greenfield advances into the championship match with a 13-7-2 record and with wins in seven of its last eight martches. Neuse stands 18-3.
