Kerr-Vance Academy’s quest for a third straight championship appearance — and a much sought after title win — ended in the semifinals of the NCISAA tennis tournament following a 5-1 loss to Wayne Country Day.
It was the fifth season in a row the Spartans have failed to advance past the Chargers in the state playoffs. Kerr-Vance had reached the state title game each of the past two years, but this year it was Wayne Country Day that earned the chance to compete for a third straight championship.
The teams played doubles first, and the Chargers took a 2-1 lead over the Spartans. Kerr-Vance’s top two duos of Holly Steg/Savannah Barnes and Kayla Abbott/Edie Echols lost their matches 8-3 and 8-5 respectively. Caroline Williams and Lorena Negron won their doubles match 8-1, however, leaving Wayne Country Day in need of three points to clinch a victory.
Kerr-Vance would draw no closer, though. Abott, Steg and Barnes were all unable to close out their matches, and the Chargers picked up the needed three points from their top three seeds.
The Spartans finished 11-5 on the season, with a 4-1 record in their conference.
