STATESVILLE — Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Community Christian School varsity boys soccer team rallied to its North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A first-round game with Statesville Christian, but a 68th-minute free kick from some 40 yards out sent the Cyclones to a 3-2 setback.
CCS, the No. 10 seed out of the Carolina Christian Conference, had its season end at 11-13. Statesville Christian, the No. 7 seed from the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association, hiked its record to 13-7 and will take on No. 2 Wayne Country Day (18-2-1) in next week’s quarterfinal round.
Statesville opened the scoring on a 20-yard shot in the fourth minute for a 1-0 cushion that stood into halftime.
However, in the 42nd minute, CCS would strike back. Eighth grader Salvador Aguilera-Guzman drew a penalty kick after being fouled by the final Statesville defender in the peanlty box. He converted the PK, tying the match at 1.
Roughly 13 minutes later, Statesville reclaimed the lead on a header to go up 2-1.
The Cyclones countered for the final time off a set piece in the 63rd. Andrew Huston’s corner kick into the box found Aguilera-Guzman, who supplied the finish to tie it at 2.
But in the 68th, Statesville converted the long free kick to secure the game-winning goal.
The game marked the end of prep careers for Garrison Walker and Spensir Heath, who missed the contest due to the CCS football game being contested at Southampton Academy. CCS will return a total of 16 players for the 2016 season.
