Byron Dinkins leaving Northside Christian to coach at Carmel Christian

By Langston Wertz Jr.

One of Mecklenburg County’s most successful boys basketball coaches is changing schools.

Northside Christian’s Byron Dinkins, 48, is leaving to become head coach at Carmel Christian, a source close to the school confirmed to the Observer. Dinkins was unavailable for comment. Northside Christian girls coach Ashley McGuirt is also leaving for Carmel, the source confirmed.

McGuirt coached for three years at Northside Christian and led the Knights girls to three straight Metrolina Athletic Conference regular-season championships. Her teams reached two NCISAA 2A state finals and one NCISAA championship game.

Dinkins was 165-20 in six years at Northside. His teams won six MAC regular-season and six MAC conference tournament championships. Dinkins teams won three NCISAA 2A state championships and reached the final round for six straight seasons.

At Carmel, a southeast Charlotte private school, Dinkins will replace Joshua Coley, who coached at Carmel for one season, leading the team to a 23-8 record and a 14-0 mark in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association. Despite winning the regular-season and conference tournaments, Carmel did not receive a bid to the NCISAA tournament. Dinkins will officially start his new job in June.

Carmel Christian is expected to return at least 8 players from last year’s team.
