The Trinity Academy Tigers put on a show in the third quarter to defeat the Wayne Country Day Chargers 89-65 on Thursday night.
Chargers guard Nayshin Waller started off the scoring in Thursday night’s game when he rose above everybody to lay the ball into the basket.
The Chargers continued to score inside in the post early in the first quarter, and all five of their first-made shots came inside the post, which gave them a 10-5 lead. The lead didn’t last for long, as the Tigers nailed three 3-pointers in a row to take a 14-10 lead.
After the 3-point barrage from the Tigers, the Chargers answered back by nailing four 3-pointers on their next four possessions.
The first 3-pointer came from forward Collin Tanner, who shot it from just behind the arc on the left side of the court. The next two 3-pointers came from guard Jordan Cooper, which made the score 20-19 in favor of the Tigers. The final 3-pointer came from Zane Cogdell, whose three gave the Chargers a 22-20 lead to end the quarter.
In the second quarter, the high offensive scoring output for both teams continued. With Wayne Country Day trailing 29-27, Tanner caught fire for the Chargers. Tanner nailed a jump shot to tie the game at 29-29, and after the Chargers surrendered a 3-pointer on defense, he hit another jump shot to make the game 32-31.
On the next offensive possession, Tanner scored again hitting two free throws to give Wayne Country Day a 33-32 lead.
Even with Tanner’s offensive production in the second quarter, Trinity Academy took a 39-36 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter everything went wrong on both ends of the floor for Wayne Country Day. The 3-point game that helped them take a lead in the second quarter seemed to vanish for the Chargers.
On defense, they seemed to be unable to stop an offensive attack from the Tigers. The Tigers were able to take advantage of the lackluster play from the Chargers and outscored the Chargers 20-2 at the start of the third quarter to take a 59-38 lead.
The Chargers were never able to recover in the third quarter, and Trinity Academy increased their lead even further to win 89-65.
