Coastal Christian earns a pair of wins in Tuesday basketball action against Cape Fear Academy

By Jackson Fuller StarNews Correspondent

A hard-fought rivalry took on a whole new meaning for Coastal Christian’s Kamron Greene in a 60-55 win Tuesday over Cape Fear Academy.

With 2:36 remaining and the Centurions (13-10 overall, 3-4 Coastal Rivers) holding a 46-42 lead, Greene was the recipient of a hard flagrant foul that sent the sophomore guard crashing to the floor. Greene initially didn’t think he would return after his tooth cut into his bottom lip and blood poured onto the floor.

However, Greene fought through the pain, stayed in the game and sank the ensuing free throws. His toughness was on display throughout the chippy contest, leading Coastal Christian in all three major categories with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

“We kept our cool,” Greene said. “If we lose our cool, that’s what (Cape Fear) wants, but I knew if we didn’t do that we would come out with the win.”

Coastal Christian looked like it might cruise to victory until Cape Fear Academy (6-10, 0-5) came storming back in the third quarter. The Hurricanes cut a 24-16 halftime deficit to 33-32 heading to the fourth quarter thanks to a buzzer-beating three by Keeshawn Barthelemy.

Matt Kiatipis gave Cape Fear its first lead since the first quarter at 34-33 on a jumper to open the final period, but Greene immediately responded for Coastal with a three-pointer on the other end.

The Centurions would hold on to that advantage for the rest of the game.

“I’m never worries about Kamron. He’s a warrior,” Coastal Christian coach Craig Wheeler said. “He made some big plays for us tonight over the course of the game.”

Coastal Christian sealed the game with some excellent shooting from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The Centurions went 15-of-20 from the charity stripe in the final eight minutes as Cape Fear attempted to extend the game as long as possible.

When the Centurions weren’t dialing free throws, they were moving the ball around with precision. Coastal shot a pedestrian 17-of-41 from the field, but assisted on 10 of those 17 baskets.

“I think we’ve done a good job early in games passing the ball but it’s faded at the end. Tonight, we shared the ball for 32 minutes,” Wheeler said

Barthelemy led Cape Fear Academy with 17 points and Kiatipis followed him with 15.
