From late Monday...

The Lady Knights of Northside Christian Academy were able to win their first Varsity soccer match in over 5 years tonight as they held on for a victory over Westminster Catawba in Rock Hill. The program, which had previously folded for a few years, is in it's first season of reestablishment and humbly boasts one of the youngest rosters in the entire state (10 players in Grades 7-8).

After two straight 9-0 defeats at the hands of Hickory Grove and Gaston Christian, the Lady Knights unexpectedly found themselves in a very competitive game on Monday. Despite losing Sophomore Captain Averie Brown to a concussion last week, NCA was able to readjust it's lineup and escape with a 3-2 victory. Team Captain Caroline Horne (Junior) moved from her traditional role as the starting CMF to play defense for her injured teammate.

Midway through the 1st Half, Horne was pushed back into the midfield and found herself on a quick breakaway into the box. After being knocked off the ball, Horne recovered and retook possession, firing a low shot just past the WCCS GK. The goal marked the first score for Northside Varsity Women's Soccer in several years.

Minutes later, 8th Grader Christiana McLean stole the ball from an Indian defender near midfield and took it the distance for a 2-0 lead.

The Indians would score just before halftime as Sophomore Kim Huang slipped a nice shot into the lower-right corner past Knights GK Olivia Ficklin.

The 2nd Half was a back-and-forth battle that was very evenly matched. McLean would find the back of the net again, giving NCA a 3-2 lead. But WCCS was not finished, as Huang scored her second goal of the match with about 90 seconds to play.

The Knights would fall back and play defense the rest of the way, narrowly escaping with a win.

It was a great match by two very young teams. Congrats to new WCCS Coach Christiana Holz on a good game.

NCA improved to 1-2 on the season, while WCCS fell to 0-3.
