Max Wright and Alonzo Edmond scored, and Corey Chambers delivered a shutout in the net, to propel Gaston Day School to a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Wayne Country Day of Goldsboro to earn a berth in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A state championship game.

Both teams were scoreless through the first 20 minutes of play thanks to solid back line play. The Spartans limited Wayne Country Day to only two shots on goal in the first half.

Gaston Day had more opportunities early, and use that familiarity to strike first. Just past the halfway mark of the first half, Gaston Day’s Max Wright carried into the box, made his way inside 10 yards, and sneaked one past Chargers goalkeeper Thomas

Sumner to put the Spartans in front, 1-0. The Gaston Day defense starred throughout the day. Led by the back line of Hunter Warren, Andrew Groomes, Nate Granets, and David Efird, the Spartans limited the Chargers to only two first half shots and six in total.

With nearly two minutes remaining, Gaston Day’s Alonzo Edmond found himself in a breakaway situation with only the keeper to beat. Looking for insurance, Edmond’s first try was turned away, but he played the rebound with his left foot and sealed the Spartan win.

Corey Chambers picked up the shutout in goal for Gaston Day. While he didn’t see much action early, as time wound down and the Panthers became more desperate for an equalizer, Chambers stayed ready and helped the Spartans close.

Notes: Tuesday’s shutout was the 11th of the season for the Spartans ...

Wayne Country Day finished their season at 18-1-0, and 7-0-0 in conference play. Gaston Day improved to 17-2-0 overall (8-1-0 in Metrolina play).

What’s next: Gaston Day will take on Fayetteville Academy for the 2A NCISSA state championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Westchester Country Day School in High Point.
