HIGH POINT —
The Westchester Country Day boys soccer team scored in the first minute of the game to set the tone and held firm defensively throughout to beat defending state champion St. David’s 3-0 on Friday in Westchester Invitational at Kennedy Field.

Tommy Boggis had one goal and two assists to lead the Wildcats (1-0), who will face Wesleyan Christian in today’s championship at 5 p.m. Jeremiah Foster and Klaus Paeffgen each added a goal, while Dylan Sellers had an assist.

“It was a great win,” Westchester coach Adam Schwartz said. “With the state champions coming to our field, we were fired up and we were motivated. Now, we have to turn the page and get ready for the No. 3 team in the country.

“It’s a good confidence builder, but we know it’s one game at a time. … We’re just trying to grow. We have a lot of young guys who played great. And we have a lot of old guys who played hard and showed great leadership. It was a true team win.”

Foster scored 55 seconds into the game off an assist by Boggis to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Boggis’ pass into the penalty area went through a couple players in front and found Foster along the far side for the goal.

Then, 11 ½ minutes later, Boggis played a free kick from just beyond the penalty area that deflected off a player in front and then the goalkeeper and bounced to Paeffgen in front for the goal and a 2-0 lead with 17:20 left in the half.

“It was a lot better than I even imagined,” said Boggis, a senior. “It was great having such a close team out there and showing up against a state championship team no one expected us to beat and shutting them out, which we love. We just played great – that was something special.

“It was such a great feeling to go from the alumni game last week in which we gave up three goals in the first 10 minutes to coming out here today and getting three goals in the first 35 minutes. It’s a big confidence boost for us and I think it set the tone for the game.”

Boggis added a goal with 6:20 left in the half off a long throw-in by Sellers to give Westchester a 3-0 lead that held into halftime. The Wildcats’ defense, anchored by goalkeepers Will Argo (six saves) and Davis Privette, held firm the rest of the way.
