Gaston Day School punched its first-ever ticket to a state championship game in volleyball Tuesday evening thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Statesville Christian.
The first set was hotly contested early. Both teams were tied at 5-5, but Gaston Day rattled off a 12-2 run en route to a 25-15 first-set victory.
The second set was the most competitive of the three, with both teams deadlocked at 10-10 at one point. The Lady Spartans went on a 7-3 run this time, and staved off a late push from Statesville Christian, to take the second set 25-20.
The third set saw another close start, with both teams tying at 5-5, and Statesville Christian taking the lead for the first and only time at 8-7, but once again Gaston Day went on a run and pulled away for a third set 25-14 win that secured the Lady Spartans a berth in Saturday’s 2A N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship game.
“The last time Gaston Day made it to a state semifinal was 30 years ago,” said head coach Derek Bing. “These girls have put the work in over the last 26 months, and I’m just so happy for them.”
Star players: Gaston Day was led by Sidney Bing’s 47 assists and 13 digs, Lauralee Hurst added 18 digs and 20 kills, and Drew Brown had three aces, 16 kills, and seven digs.
What’s next: The Lady Spartans travel to Carmel Christian in Charlotte on Saturday, to take on Freedom Christian Academy of Fayetteville in the state title game.
