Caldwell Academy wins 2A volleyball title, beats previously undefeated Gaston Day

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In a battle of two undefeated teams, Gaston Day traveled to Caldwell Academy for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A volleyball state championship on Saturday morning, but Gaston Day did not end the day unbeaten.
Caldwell Academy defeated Gaston Day in straight sets 25-20, 25-17, 25-20.
"It's huge for us," said Caldwell Academy head volleyball coach Dan Bozarth. "It's a goal every season as long as I've been the coach here; it's my ninth year. Every year we say "we want to be state champs", so for us to come in and have the opportunity to win a state title on our home court is definitely special. Very thankful and proud of the girls for
Caldwell Academy opened up a big lead in the first set, scoring the first 12 points, each point coming off the serve of senior Lindsey MacDiarmid. Trailing 15-2, Gaston Day called a timeout.
The timeout helped Gaston Day settle in as it attempted a rally. Caldwell Academy was able to hold off the comeback though, winning the opening set 25-20.
Things were much closer in the second set. Caldwell Academy found itself down 7-6, then surged to take a 12-8 lead on a 6-1 run, forcing the Spartans to call a timeout. Caldwell Academy went on to claim a 25-17 win.
Gaston Day led much of the third set by three or four points, but Caldwell Academy climbed back to tie the set at 18-18 en route to a 25-20 win to claim the title.
Caldwell Academy ends the season with a perfect 20-0 record. This is the second volleyball state championship Caldwell Academy has claimed, the first coming in 2015. Caldwell Academy was the runner-up in 2016 and 2018. Gaston Day ends the season with an 11-1 mark.
Three Caldwell Academy players recorded double-digit kills on Saturday: Sophia Plasman (junior) had a team-high 14, Lindsey MacDiarmid (senior) added 12, and Gabby Black (senior) finished with 10. Sophomore libero Madison Bozarth contributed 15 digs in unbeaten Eagles' 20th win as well.
