Trinity Academy girls, Davidson Day boys claim 2A cross country titles

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A cross country state championship, Trinity Academy of Raleigh's girls and Davidson Day's boys claimed the team championships.
Trinity Academy outpaced second place Westchester Country Day 79-100. Thales Academy of Apex came in third with a score of 118, followed by St. Thomas More Academy (123) and Burlington Christian Academy (149), who broke a tie for fifth place with Caldwell Academy.
Eighth grader Morgan Pennington led the way for Trinity Academy, finishing third in race with a time of 20:26.1. Senior Leslie Meadowcroft was the next best runner from Trinity Academy. Meadowcroft placed tenth with a time of 21:37.6, which was ninth in the scoring order.
The O'Neal School's Molly Kuzma, a senior, won the girls' individual championship with a comfortable margin. Kuzma finished the rae in 19:43.3, the only sub-20 minute time in the race. St. Thomas More Academy's Anna Richard, a junior, was second with a time of 20:16.7, ten seconds ahead of Pennington.
Rounding out the top five in the individual race was Rocky Mount Academy seventh grader Essie Chafin (20:46.7) and Westchester Country Day sophomore Ali Schwartz (20:51.9).

Davidson Day's boys team finished the day with a score of 90, a convincing margin with Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill, which placed second in the team race with a score of 130. Thales Academy of Apex (133), Rocky Mount Academy (149), and The O'Neal School (154) rounded out the top five.
Mitchell Zammitti led Davidson Day to the team title. The junior finished fourth with a time of 17:56.5, and was the only Davidson Day runner to finish in the top 15. Senior Ben Slay finished 17th with a time of 19:05.5, and Max Carr, another senior, finished 19th with a time of 19:07.7.
Westminster Catawba's Spenser Bailey won the individual boys championship, edging Westchester Country Day's Cruz Hesling. Bailey finished with a time of 17:10.0, nearly ten seconds ahead of Hesling's 17:19.9 time.
Caleb Bayne, a senior at Westchester Country Day, placed third with a time of 17:31.1, followed by Zammitti and Rocky Mount Academy senior Henry Forester, who posted a time of 18:04.0.
