FCD baseball suffers 7-run loss

LEWISVILLE — In arguably its worst performance of the season, according to coach Randy Pope, Forsyth Country Day lost 10-3 to Cary Academy Thursday afternoon at Shamrock Baseball Field.
On offense, the Furies (7-5) were outhit by Cary Academy 8-3 and struck out eight times while drawing only one walk. In the field, three FCD pitchers combined to walk eight batters, and the Furies committed three costly errors that accounted for four runs.
“We had several walks and several errors today, which is not like us,” Pope said. “They had a good pitcher on the mound, but I thought we helped him out on some occasions, so it just snowballed on us today.”
The Chargers (7-2) were led by freshman left-handed pitcher Adam Bloebaum, who threw 6-1/3 innings, allowed zero earned runs and only three hits, while striking out eight batters and walking one.
Bloebaum retired eight of the last nine men he faced, before leaving with one out and a runner on second base in the seventh inning after throwing 92 pitches.
All three of the Furies’ runs were unearned, as FCD scored two runs in the second inning thanks to three Chargers’ errors and scored another run in the fourth inning after an error by Cary Academy second baseman Keegan Joyce.
“Adam did a really good job of throwing strikes and staying around the plate,” coach Ray Pope of Cary Academy said.
“He is a gamer. If something happens, he doesn’t let it rattle him; he just comes back and goes right after them.”
Bloebaum (3-0) was able to pitch with a lead throughout, as the Chargers’ offense put up three runs in the top of the first inning off of FCD starting pitcher Matty Edwards (3-2).
Edwards threw 3-2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) and seven hits, while striking out only one batter and walking five.
After Chargers leadoff man Spencer Reed started the game with a single to left field, two-hole hitter Jack Warner followed with a walk before shortstop Tyler Marshall hit an RBI single to the right-center field gap, scoring Reed and giving Cary Academy a 1-0 lead.
After Bloebaum, who was batting fourth, hit into a fielder’s choice, Chargers catcher Justin Reich hit an RBI single down the left field line scoring Marshall.
An error by Furies third baseman Ben Clary Holt allowed the third run of the first inning to score.
For the game, the Chargers collected seven singles and drew eight walks, compared to only one extra base hit.
“Our philosophy has always been: get them on, move them over, and get them in,” Ray Pope said. “Today, we kept putting the ball in play, which was really good.
“We have been looking forward to this game all year because our conference play starts next week and we knew this was a good team, so this catapults us into the next part of our season.”
