ARDEN – Christ School coach Cody Geyer woke up Tuesday morning with a pit in his stomach.

“I was nervous, and I can’t remember a day in my life where I’ve worn a baseball uniform and been nervous,” Geyer said.

Mike Reynolds was anxious, too. The senior got a text Sunday from Geyer asking if he wanted to be the starting pitcher for possibly his final home game.

Reynolds was up to the task and then some in the first round of the NCISAA 3-A playoffs. He threw the first 4.1 innings and was 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk in a 13-4 win over North Raleigh Christian Academy.

Wake Forest recruit William Fleming, Max LeCroy, Jackson Hipp, Seth Griswold and Will Goosmann added two hits apiece for the fifth-seeded Greenies (19-3). They advance to play at No. 4 Charlotte Providence Day (17-7) Saturday at 1 p.m.

Reynolds is from Asheville and one of only four seniors for Christ School. He committed to the College of Charleston last June, but has since decided to attend Florida State as only a student.

“It was a good feeling to win this game, especially as a senior and not making the playoffs last year,” Reynolds said.

“I wanted to go as long as I could (pitching) for my team. It’s been a great season. Everyone has really put it together and we’ve clicked as a team.”

The Greenies were off to the races after a four-run first inning, highlighted by Chad Treadway’s three-run double. Hipp and Griswold also drove in three runs.

Reynolds was relieved by Hunter Macomber and finally Treadway to close out a game and nearly ended more than once due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Besides the outcome, Geyer considered Tuesday a success because Christ School was able to save Fleming for its second round game. Fleming is 5-1 with a 0.78 earned-run average and 33 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.

“Keeping Will out was the hope and I know (North Raleigh Christian) knew that was our strategy,” Geyer said.

“We got contributions in every spot, one through nine. The guys deserved it. It’s a big win, but we’re not done.”

Christ School has won eight more games this spring than 2016 in Geyer's first season as coach. The team's four seniors are Fleming, Reynolds, Patrick Cunningham and Henry Hawthorne.
