HP Christian topples FCD, 65-62

By Jay Spivey Winston-Salem Journal

LEWISVILLE — With his team trailing most of the first three quarters, Michael Huett Jr. of High Point Christian nailed a 3-pointer with 36.5 seconds left to propel the Cougars to a 65-62 win over Forsyth Country Day Tuesday night at the Childress Activities Center.

The game was either tied or led by FCD since it was 10-10 on a jumper by Bruno Solomun with 4:23 left in the first quarter.

“It was a special 3-pointer because we needed that,” said Huett. “It was a very tough game for us, but that 3-pointer was very helpful for us. I’m proud I hit that one.”

The Furies fell to 17-3 and 0-1 in the rugged PACIS 3-A, and the Cougars, who have four players committed to NCAA Division I schools, improved to 15-3 and 1-1.

Edrice Adebayo, who is 6-foot-8 and 235 pounds and has committed to play at Kentucky next season, led the Cougars with 19. Ty Graves, who has committed to Boston College, added 10, and Michal Seals, who is uncommitted, added 16. Ben Robertson, who has committed to Bucknell, scored seven, and Amidou Bamba, who has committed to Coastal Carolina, didn’t score.

Solomun led FCD with 16, and Ivan Milicevic and Matt Edwards added 11 each.

“We had control of the game,” said West. “We did pretty much what we wanted to. And at the end we couldn’t make a shot. And they made their shots. They made some plays. That’s why they’re a good team.”

The Furies led 39-34 at halftime even after Adebayo scored 12 points, but they extended it to 44-34 with 6:32 left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Solomun. The Furies held Adebayo scoreless in the third quarter, but the Cougars trimmed it to 52-48 at the end of the third quarter on two free throws by Seals.

“We play pretty much everybody the same way,” said West. “We tried to deny him the ball in the post. He came out and got the ball facing up. You just have to keep him in front of you.”

Adebayo scored the Cougars’ first six points of the fourth quarter, but the Furies took a 58-52 lead on a follow by Milicevic with 3:43 left. The Cougars roared back to tie it at 60-60 on a three-point play by Seals after he was fouled by Brandon Mayhan with 1:50 left.

Huett then hit the 3-pointer to take the 63-60 lead, Seals made a free throw, and with 4.2 seconds left, Graves gave the Cougars a 65-62 lead on a free throw. Tripp Greene of the Furies rushed up court after the inbounds pass from Edwards, but Greene’s 3-pointer went off the front of the rim to end the game.

“I was content with going for the last shot,” High Point Christian coach Brandon Clifford said of Huett’s 3-pointer. “I trust my guys if they get a good look with a wide open shot like he got. I trust him to take it; he took it and he made it.”
