APA falls to St. David's in boys', girls' basktball
A wild game ended relatively anticlimactic.
Arendell Parrott Academy fell to St. David’s 58-56 in a wild affair, as the Patriots got back on the court for the first time since Jan. 15. There were 14 lead changes between the teams, including 10 in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots (6-5, 0-2 EPIC) couldn’t get the final big play against the Warriors (4-8, 1-2).
The Patriots did start off by honoring their four seniors — Parker Edwards, Nick Harrison, Josh Oknokwo and Will Whitley — in a pregame ceremony. Whitley, who missed the entire season due to recovering from an ACL injury suffered during football season, was able to hit a layup to start the game, recording his first points of his senior year.
St. David’s controlled most of the first half and led by as many as seven early in the second quarter, but APA chipped away at the deficit before a 3-pointer from Mir Mir Moore gave the Patriots their first lead at 24-23 with 2:41 left in the frame. APA hit five perimeter shots in the half, including a second one from Moore late in the second as the Patriots took a 30-29 lead into the break.
The Warriors got back into a groove in the third quarter, using a 9-2 run to establish control and pushing the advantage to 43-37 after a Meik Goode basket late in the frame. Moore countered with a pair of free throws before assisting on a Noah Miller layup to close the gap to two heading into the fourth. Harrison started the final frame with a 3-pointer to put the Patriots back on top in a quarter where neither team had an advantage higher than two.
Moore’s basket tied the game at 55 with 2:33 to play, but Ghalon Chisley broke the tie for St. David’s with 1:31 to play. Cole Dawson split a pair of free throws with 17.9 seconds to go to bring APA within 57-56 and the Patriots send St. David’s to the line.
The Warriors missed two front ends of 1-and-1s, but were able to garner rebounds. On the third attempt with 5.3 seconds left, Goode hit the first before missing the second, give APA one last chance. Unfortunately, the Patriots weren’t able to get a shot off in time.
“I thought at times we didn’t match their toughness, but we showed good moments coming off of an 18-day layoff,” APA coach Clay Harrell said. “We’ve got to finish the game — we practiced for two weeks boxing out on free throws and it may not have shown today. We’ll build on this, and we have four more games to go.”
