Carmel Christian holds off Village Christian to win NCISAA 3A title

By Kyle Morton, HighSchoolOT.com producer

The Carmel Christian Cougars are the NCISAA 3A state champions after a thrilling 65-64 win over the Village Christian Academy Knights.

The Knights got the game started off on the right foot, as they maintained a lead throughout the first quarter that was extended to 20-13 when Travion McCray made a buzzer-beater from beyond half-court.

McCray was the biggest contributor for the Knights all throughout the game, as he consistently sparked the offense and led all scorers in the game with 29.

But Carmel had more guys going, with three scorers reaching double figures.

Donovan Gregory at 22 points to lead the way for the Cougars while Deangelo Epps had 14 points and Myles Hunter had 13.

The game was tightly-contested throughout the second half, with the lead changing hands several different times.

McCray gave his team the lead with two clutch free throws to move ahead 64-63, and the Knights nearly forced a stop to seal the win.

But after several missed attempts, the Cougars continued to come up with loose rebounds, eventually putting one in to grab a 65-64 lead.

As it was all day for the Knights, the ball was in McCray's hands to try to get the win, but his attempt at a second buzzer-beater for the game clunked off the rim.

The win and state title victory allowed Carmel Christian to finish the season with a sterling 31-3 record.
