No. 1 Greensboro Day at No. 2 Wesleyan

What: PACIS boys basketball
When: 7 p.m. today
Records: Greensboro Day 27-3 overall, 4-0
PACIS; Wesleyan 24-3, 3-1.
Admission: Sold out.

At stake: For Greensboro Day, a victory would lock up the PACIS title and a likely No. 1 seed for the NCISAA Class 3-A playoffs.

For Wesleyan, a victory would create a tie with GDS atop the PACIS standings and give the Trojans a shot at the No. 1 seed. The last two 3-A champions have been invited to the prestigious Dick’sSporting Goods Nationals in New York.

THREE THINGS TO WATCH

J.P. Moorman vs. Jaylen Hoard:

Moorman, a 6-foot-6senior forward, took over in the fourth quarter of Greensboro Day’s 51-46 home-court win Jan. 24. The Temple signee needs to get going a little bit earlier on the road, and he needs to match the play of Wesleyan’s Hoard even though they will rarely go head-to-head. Hoard, a 6-8 junior forward, is the key to most of what the Trojans do offensively. With a versatile skillset much like that of Charlotte Hornets star and fellow Frenchman Nic Batum, Hoard is at his best when he is attacking.

Solomon Smith:

The 6-5 Greensboro Day forward always seems to play his best basketball in big games. The unsung senior scored eight of his 10 points in the first half against Wesleyan on Jan. 24. The Bengals, undersized against Wesleyan’s front line, need another strong effort from Smith.

Outside shooting:

Both teams struggled from beyond the arc in the first meeting, forcing most of the action to the paint and making for a physical, sometimes-ugly game. If Greensboro Day or Wesleyan gets hot from 3-point range it could open up the floor and tilt the balance in this one.
