GREENSBORO — Any thoughts of a homecoming upset of Greensboro Day were quickly put to rest by senior J.P. Moorman in a 69-51 win over High Point nChristian at Dillard Gymnasium Friday. The Bengals (25-3, 2-0 PACIS) took advantage of a cold-shooting start by the Cougars, jumping out to a 10-point lead before eventually stretching the lead to 32-16 at the half.

“I thought we did a really good job in the first half defensively, and Ithought we did a good job the last 10 minutes of the game running the court and moving the ball,” Bengals coach Freddy Johnson said. “Solomon (Smith) had a good game for us, and of course, J.P. had a good game for us.”

The Cougars’ shooting woes vanished early in the second half, however, as High Point Christian (16-7, 1-2 PACIS) made its first three shots. The rally was sparked by senior Jalen Seegars, who scored 9 of his 18 points in the third quarter, enabling the Cougars to crawl to within 42-34.

Johnson said Seegars’ presence called for a slight defensive gamble. “We had Solomon and J.P. help out more,” Johnson said. “It didn’t hurt us but one time, so it didn’t turn out too bad.” The adjustment proved to be the answer, as

Greensboro Day scored seven straight points off three turnovers for a 15-point margin as the teams entered the fourth quarter.

“I just wanted to put some doubt in (Seegars’) mind when I saw him wanting to drive and make sure he knew there weren’t any clear lanes to the basket or any easy layups,” Moorman said.

Moorman, who also finished with 18 points, called on his experience playing with and against Seegars on the AAU circuit. “Me and Jalen played on the same AAU team in the summer, so we guarded each other every day in practice.”

The Bengals now have a few days to rest after playing three games in the past week, having dispatched Wheeler (Ga.) and Wesleyan earlier.
