HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian’s postgame team meeting was brief. There wasn’t much anybody really
needed to address.“I couldn’t say anything to them except, ‘Great game,’” coach Donald Brewer said with a laugh. “We just played
good.”
The Trojans hit well and steadily pulled away on of fense and limited their opponent’s chances on defense to roll past Hickory Grove 6-0 in a meeting of state softball powerhouses Friday at Wesleyan.
Kayla Brewer went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs while Geena Autry went 2 for 3 with a home run and one RBI to lead Wesleyan (12-0). Paris White also had two hits, while Peyton Day added a double and an RBI.
“We played really good. We’re really excited about this one,” Kayla Brewer said. “It was really big to lead from the start. It just builds as the
game goes on and we keep getting more runs. They have a really good pitcher – probably one of the best we’ve seen – and we just hit the ball
really good.”
The Trojans, who won the NCISAA 3A state title in 2014 and were the No. 3 seed in last year’s tournament, led from the outset. Autr y hit
a solo homer to left in the first, and Anna Robichaud highlighted a two-run third with an RBI single.
Kayla Brewer ripped a low line drive into the netting beyond the left-field fence for a two-run home run in the fi fth to give Wesleyan a 5-0 lead. Day doubledto right-center to drive in the game’s final run in the sixth. Robichaud scattered four hits and two walks over seven innings to earn the
win in the circle. Only two runners for the Lions managedto reach third base the entire game – one in each of the final two innings once they were down big.
Savannah Brown went 2 for 4 to lead Hickory Grove, which has reached seven of the last 3A championship finals and won fi ve straight titles from 2006 to 2010.Casey Chambers also added a double, while Brown took the pitching loss.
The Trojans, who also beat state powers Providence Day and Charlotte Christian earlier this season, visit crosstown rival High Point Christian on Tuesday at Wallburg Baptist before hosting reigning state champion Forsyth Country Day on Friday.
“It’s huge (beating Hickory Grove),” Donald Brewer said. “They were the No. 1 team in the tournament last year and one of the teams we’re going to be fighting with for the No. 1 spot this year. So, right now, it’s going to come down to playing Forsyth. But if we can play like that, I’ll take our
chances again.
