APA falls to Coastal Christian in girls' soccer quarterfinals
The playstyle was similar in the rematch, but unfortunately for Arendell Parrott, the result wasn’t.
The Patriots fell to Coastal Christian 4-0 in the NCISAA 3A quarterfinals Friday. The Centurions (11-4-1) fell to the Patriots (9-6) 1-0 on March 25 in Wilmington, but maintained its aggressive offensive approach to pick up the win and advance to the program’s first state semifinals appearance in girls’ soccer.
“When we played the first time, I think we had the edge but didn’t convert on chances,” Coastal Christian coach Brian Kurtz said. “We spent lot of time in practice making sure we finished shots and chances we created, and I think that was the biggest difference.”
The Centurions had a 27-8 advantage when it came to shots on goal, and the team converted in the fourth minute as Jaeden Earle made it 1-0. The Patriots had a pair of strong opportunities in the 17th and 34th minutes, but shots from Adelyn Lowry and Alex Melk were turned back. Coastal Christian took a 1-0 advantage, and the teams had to wait for about 35 minutes due to inclement weather.
When the skies cleared, Coastal Christian turned up the pressure, outshooting APA 14-3 in the second half. Morgan Fritz scored in the 57th minute, followed by goals from Elsa Johnson (62nd) and Finley Melvin (65th) to ensure the Centurions moved on.
“All of our goals, we’ve been practicing for weeks,” Johnson said. “As a junior, it’s just nice to be able to do this — we had to come out and really show that we wanted it more.”
Coastal Christian’s Brooke Allen said the team wanted to come out of the break on a mission, and it worked.
“Coach said the team that comes out the fastest and scores the first goal is going to win,” Allen said. “We knew we had to do that to the best of our abilities and it’s a blessing. We look to go out and have fun, but also play intense and do it as a team. We’ve definitely grown there.”
APA coach Shivar Person said the loss was tough, especially for seniors Adelyn Lowry, Alex Melk and Emily Sydes. Melk and Sydes were part of the 2019 state championship team — the school’s first in girls’ soccer — and Lowry finished as the school’s all-time leading goal scorer.
“Losing hurts, but we lost to a good team today,” Person said. “We went on the road the first time and played well enough to win and did. We knew they’d be ready and Brian does a great job getting his team ready. It’s unfortunate we lost because we hoped to continue the legacy our seniors left here, but all credit has to go to Coastal — they were the better team today.”
