Trojans start fast, blank Bengals

HIGH POINT – Wesleyan Christian quickly got back to its winning ways.
The Trojans controlled much of the game – scoring five goals in the first half – and rolled past Greensboro Day 6-0 in PACIS 2A/3A girls soccer Thursday evening at Wesleyan.
“The win was important,” Wesleyan coach Harry Sherwood said. “We tied a game last week, and so it was nice to see the girls bounce back more than anything. We’re at the stage now where we’re on the second leg of our conference opponents.
“So, we knew what to expect coming in. Greensboro Day always give a good fight and never stop playing. So, credit to them – they did that again today. They came alongside us and forced us to bring out the best in our team, and we were thankful for that opportunity.”
Timber Powell scored three goals to lead the Trojans (9-1-4 overall, 5-0 PACIS), who had won seven in a row before tying North Davidson. Madi Kyle added one goal and three assists.
Maddie Cashion and Audrey Ann Beck also each had a goal, while Katherine Glover and Karly Beck each dished an assist. Powell scored in the sixth minute off a corner kick by Kyle, and Wesleyan was largely in control the rest of the way.
Cashion scored in the 11th minute, followed by Audrey Ann Beck in the 25th minute, Powell in the 35th minute and Kyle with eight seconds left to help the Trojans, ranked No. 5 among NCISAA 3A teams, lead 5-0 at halftime.
Powell scored her third goal in the 46th minute.
“I think we played great,” said Powell, a senior who has signed with Lees-McRae. “The last couple games we’d been struggling with communication and our formation has been a little messed up too. So, yesterday in practice we really worked on that, and I think it definitely showed out there today. … Our last game, we finished the last five minutes stronger. So, our goal today was for our first five minutes to be the strongest, and I think
we met that goal.”
Regan Williams made two saves in goal, as Wesleyan finished with a 23-4 in shots – holdingthe Bengals (1-10-1, 0-5) without a shot for the first 25 minutes of the game.
The Trojans, who hold a slim lead atop the PACIS with three games remaining (including one each against their nearest challengers: Forsyth Countr y Day and High Point Christian), play again Tuesday at home against Davidson
Day.
We’re facing our conference opponents for the second time now,” Sherwood said. “We got wins – hard wins – so we know what to expect from the rematches. More than anything, thegirls’ mindset is that we know we playing for something. We’re playing for more time – more time together. “We know we have three more guaranteed games. So
everything matters in those games to finish strong and play for more time together. We want another game and then another game and then another game until someone tells us we can’t play anymore.”
