Rain pushes state softball to Monday

GASTONIA — Wesleyan Christian split two games to advance to the finals of the NCISAA 3A softball championship Saturday at Gaston Christian.
The top-seeded Trojans lost 3-2 against second-seeded Providence Grove in a game that began Friday, was postponed due to weather and resumed Saturday afternoon.
Wesleyan, needing to win all three of its final games to win the title, then beat fourth-seeded Hickory Grove 6-3 in a semifinal elimination game and led 4-1 Providence Grove in the top of the fifth when weather struck once again.
The tournament, which has been delayed three times because of weather, will resume Monday. The location and times have yet to be determined.
In the first game, Providence Day, which trailed 2-1 overnight, rallied with two runs — including a home run — to overtake the Trojans, who were bumped to the losers bracket and had to play again immediately to extend their season.
In the second game, Anna Robichaud went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double to lead Wesleyan, which scored once in the second, thrice in the fourthand once in the fifth to lead 4-1 after trailing 1-0 in the second.
Peyton Day and Geena Autr y also had a hit apiece, while ReaganNeal and Bryanna Thomas each had an RBI. Robichaud picked upthe win in the circle, scattering seven hits and one walk over seveninnings.
Hickory Grove made two errors in the fourth inning that helped the Trojans score runs, walked in a run in the fifth and committed another error in the sixth that helped score runs. But that gave Wesleyan life into the championship.
In the first championship game, the Trojans scored three runs in the top of the first to jump ahead.Kayla Brewer had a sacrifice fly, Michaela Hicks grounded intoan RBI fielder’s choice, and Paris White lined an RBI single, After Providence Day scoredonce to pull within 3-1, Autry answered in the second with an RBI single to right center to give Wesleyan a 4-1 lead. Robichaud settled in after the first inning, allowing only one hit.
The game, which was stopped for lightning but finally postponed once it rained heavily, will resume with a runner on, no outs and Brewer at the plate with a full count in the top of the fourth
