PROVIDENCE DAY GETS GOING LATE, STOPS CHRISTIAN IN CISAA SHOWDOWN
-- Tim Donelli

The Providence Day Chargers and Charlotte Christian Knights basketball teams each came into Tuesday night’s CISAA matchup at 3-1 in the conference. Providence Day emerged with a hard-fought 43-39 victory to claim first place in the conference for now.

After Christian rallied from a seven-point deficit to tie the game at 38 with 2:51 to play, Providence Day’s defense clamped down and Chargers point guard Quave Propst-Allison came up big. Allison scored on a layup for a 40-38 Chargers’ advantage with 35 seconds left, and his two late-game free throws second later iced the game for the Chargers.

“With my experience I’ve learned that you have to move on to the next shot,” said Propst-Allison. “I used my aggressiveness and my instincts to go to the basket to make a layup, and then the next possession get fouled and make the free throws.”

Propst-Allison finished with nine points along with Jaxon Prunty who also had nine. Donavan Atwell led Providence Day in scoring with 14. Charlotte Christian had two players in double figures with Bryce Cash finishing with a game-high 18 points, while Cade Preston chipped in with 12 points.

“It was a tough game,” said Chargers’ coach Ron Johnson. “Charlotte Christian’s a great team and Coach Brown (Shonn Brown) does a great job with those guys. They’re a tough defensive team and a very physical team. I feel good and our guys really dug in and fought. We had to do that in order to win tonight.”

THREE WHO MATTERED Quave Propst–Allison, Providence Day: Scored game-winning basket with 35 seconds left and added two late-game free throws to ice the game.
Cade Preston, Charlotte Christian: Had six first-quarter points to fuel the Knights fast start and 12-8 first-quarter lead.
