BURNHAM’S BIG NIGHT HELPS CARMEL SPEED PAST CHRISTIAN, TO SEMIS
The first time Carmel Christian played Charlotte Christian this season, Cougars star Ben Burnham didn’t play much. He scored 13 points and had nine rebounds in the first quarter of what turned out to be a 66-65 win.
Burnham got two technical fouls in 90 seconds (which were later rescinded after a school protest) for taunting.
Saturday, when Carmel Christian beat Charlotte Christian 75-45 in the third round of the NCISAA 4A playoffs, Burnham turned in a monster stat line: 22 points, 23 rebounds, 10 blocks.
Carmel Christian, No. 1 in the Sweet 16, has won 17 straight games, was dominant from the start. And Burnham is on quite a tear. In his past five games, he’s scored 135 points and grabbed 91 rebounds.
Next up is a home game in the state semifinals against Raleigh’s Ravenscroft School. Ravenscroft coach Kevin Billerman was an assistant coach with the Charlotte 49ers when current Carmel Christian coach Joe Badgett was a player for Charlotte in the late ‘80s.
Carmel Christian will trying to reach its third state final in four years and its first in the 4A class. Carmel moved up to 4A, the state’s most difficult classification, after winning a 2A state championship in 2018 and a 3A state title in 2019. The Cougars were upset in the second round of the 2020 3A playoffs.
