PROVIDENCE DAY GIRLS ADVANCE TO STATE SEMIFINALS
A year ago, Providence Day’s girls won their 17th N.C. Independent Schools state championship.
For a while this season, it didn’t look like the Chargers had a serious chance to try for another.
Ranked atop several state polls early in the season, the Chargers went through a stretch in late January and early February where they lost five of six games. A team that had dominated the Charlotte Independent Schools conference for 30 years finished third this season.
But after Saturday’s 50-35 win over Charlotte Country Day, the Chargers have won 20 games again and are in position for another state title.
Jordyn Latter had 15 points in Saturday’s quarterfinal win. Providence Day (20-6) held Country Day to 15 points in the second and third quarters.
Providence Day will play at overall No. 1 seed North Raleigh Christian (17-1) in Tuesday’s semifinal. This is the 20th straight season the Chargers have reached the semifinals.
