One of the most versatile athletes in Arendell Parrott Academy history has chosen his college and sport.
Matthew Huntley recently committed to N.C. Wesleyan to play baseball. Huntley had a strong senior campaign, going .411 at the plate with six doubles, 19 stolen bases, 34 runs while also playing tremendous defense as a centerfielder, but also excelled in two other sports. In football, Huntley caught 32 passes for 835 yards and 12 touchdowns — leading the Patriots in all three categories — and was second on the team in scoring during basketball season, averaging 12 points per game. In a recent sports banquet, Huntley was named “APA’s Male Athlete of the Year.”
Huntley said he gravitated toward N.C. Wesleyan for numerous reasons.
“When I visited Wesleyan’s campus, it really stood out to me,” Huntley said. “The people were inviting and I really liked the coaching staff. Coach (Greg) Clifton was the former Faith Christian baseball coach and I’m familiar with him. He also won two state championships with Faith, so he has that winning mentality.”
Robert Kravitz, APA’s baseball coach, said Huntley was an invaluable member of the team.
“He’s one of the guys you can’t really replace,” Kravitz said. “He showed great leadership abilities on and off the field — he played three sports, but he also never missed a class. He’s a high-character guy and Wesleyan is getting a wonderful student-athlete. We knew he had potential on offense and defense, but this year he really put everything together to help the team.”
Huntley, who plans to study business administration, said his time at Parrott helped him get to the next level.
“Parrott has a great tradition of excellence and I knew going here would allow me to gain essential skills needed in life,” Huntley said. “It’s a college-prep school and it taught me how to balance academics while maintaining an athletic career and social life. I can’t wait to continue my career and head out to Wesleyan.”
