ASHEVILLE – Rosman seniors have a bond that goes way beyond Monday, and for that matter any of their other five games this season.
“We’ve all been together since we were 10 years old,” guard/forward Callie Chappell said. “This is our last year. This is our last chance. Once it’s over, it’s over.”
The Tigers (5-0) remained one of three undefeated teams in Western North Carolina girls basketball Monday by downing Asheville Christian Academy, 49-32, in the first round of the Wells Fargo WNC Holiday Classic at UNC Asheville.
Chappell and Rachel Owen matched one another with 16 points, and Rosman continued to pull away in the third and fourth quarters after holding a 25-16 halftime lead. Chappell scored half her points in the fourth quarter.
“We all know each other by now, and there are never any problems,” said Owen, who is a forward. “It helps when everyone trusts each other.”
The rest of Rosman’s senior class is rounded out by guard Haley Parker and forward Madison Holden.
For the season, Chappell is averaging 20.2 points per game, followed by Owen (10.5 ppg.), freshman Gracy Biggs (10.0 ppg.) and junior Allie Whitmire (9.5 ppg.).
Owen (8.7) and Chappell (6.2) are first and second in rebounds, ahead of Holden (5-0). Chappell leads the Transylvania County team in steals (5.2) and assists (3.5), with Whitmire (2.7 apg. and 2.0 spg.) coming in second in both categories.
Chappell is the only returning All-Big Smoky Mountain Conference player from last season’s 13-12 team. The Tigers are 1-0 in the BSMC and scheduled to play their next league game Jan. 5 at Andrews.
Emma Newton and Joy Barker each had 14 points for ACA (1-7) on Monday. Both are sophomores.
The Wells Fargo tournament is WNC’s largest annual holiday basketball tourney and runs through Wednesday at UNC Asheville and Carolina Day.
Rosman will play Hickory Grove in the championship semifinals of the Blue Ridge division at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carolina Day. Hickory Grove had a 1-9 record going into Monday night’s game against Carolina Day.
The ACA-Rosman game was unique as Lions coach John Williams and Tigers coach Ashton Hughes are former All-Big South Conference players for UNCA.
