Pocknett, Byers lead Ashley past Trinity Academy in boys basketball

Kinston, N.C. — Mikhail Pocknett and Bryon Byers combined for 38 points as Ashley took down Trinity Academy 66-58 in the first game of the Kinston MLK Classic on Saturday at Kinston High School.

Ashley began to separate itself from Trinity Academy in the second quarter. After trailing 14-13 after one quarter, Ashley outscored the Tigers 16-11 in the second quarter to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.

A 19-12 advantage in the third quarter put Ashley up double-digits with a 48-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Trinity Academy attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 points in the final eight minutes, but could not overcome the deficit.

Pocknett finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists to lead the Screaming Eagles. He was 9-of-13 shooting. Byers finished with 17 points, and Mari Brown posted 14 points.

Kalani Harris was big on the boards for Ashley, posting 12 total rebounds.

Tyler Gill led Trinity Academy in scoring with 21 points on 5-of-18 shooting. He was 11-of-13 from the free throw line too.

Jake Bertolini-Felice scored 17 points and posted 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Noah Ross finished with 12 points.

Ashley is now 9-5 on the season and will return to play on Jan. 24 with a home conference game against West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles are 3-4 in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference.

Trinity Academy drops to 16-3 on the season after the loss. The Tigers are back in action on Jan. 21 with a home conference match against Carolina Friends at 6:45 p.m. Trinity Academy is 7-0 in the Tri-TAC.
