Adelyn Lowry becomes APA's leading goal-scorer in girls' soccer

Arendell Parrott’s Adelyn Lowry scored four goals Thursday against Fayetteville Academy to push her career total to 73, moving to No. 1 on the all-time list.

Adelyn Lowry had no idea she made history until after the game.

On Thursday, Arendell Parrott defeated Fayetteville Academy 7-1 as the Patriots evened their record to 1-1 on the season. During the game Lowry netted four goals, pushing her career total to 73, most in APA history. Jaclyn Ervin, who was recently selected to the school’s Hall of Fame, graduated from APA in 2006 and had 72 goals in her career.

Lowry didn’t play her freshman and sophomore year — instead, she did club ball in Raleigh after registering 68 goals in seventh and eighth grade, playing varsity with the Patriots before returning her junior year.

“Raleigh was a very good experience, but it started to become a lot with school,” Lowry said. “I realized how much I missed playing here and it felt normal, getting to be with my friends every day on the field.”

Lowry scored once last year before COVID cancelled the season after just two games. Then, after reaching the mark against Fayetteville Academy Thursday, Lowry said the entire time she didn’t know how close she was to the record.

“I didn’t know until after the game,” Lowry said. “They casually told me ‘well, you broke the school record’ and I was in shock. I had no idea, but it definitely feels good.”

Lowry is a part of arguably the best run of talent in school history when it comes to girls’ soccer. The Patriots won their first state championship in 2019, and had three of the four all-time goal scorers on the same team — Megan Blair is third with 55 and Alex Melk is fourth with 54 — before the season was cancelled. Blair graduated, and Melk — who scored three goals Thursday — has a shot to move up in the rankings during her senior season.

APA coach Shivar Person said the team has made great strides over the years and Lowry played a big factor.

“When she first got to us, we were fortunate enough as a group to win our first playoff game in seven or eight years, then made it to the semifinals her eighth-grade year,” Person said. “Adelyn and her class changed the program to the point that nobody wants to play us because of the talent we have and developed over the last six years.”

Lowry said the individual accolades are cool, but there’s one primary focus this season.

“We want to win a state championship,” she said.
