HENDERSON -- Kerr-Vance Academy found themselves on the other end of a lopsided blowout Monday evening, as The Burlington School dominated them through five innings to obtain an 18-2 victory.
Head coach Mike Rigsbee has hardly seen KVA be handed a one-sided defeat during his time with the program, adding that the best way for his players to rebound from such an outcome is to learn from their mistakes and move forward.
“It was a tough game, but sometimes that happens,” Rigsbee said. “It didn’t seem like we were really ready to play, but we have to block this out, regroup and come back Wednesday.”
Rigsbee anticipated that Monday’s matchup would be a tough one with Burlington starting junior Wagner Morrissette on the mound, who has already made a commitment to play at the collegiate level for the University of Maryland.
Once KVA senior Joel Lewis shut out Burlington at the top of the first, Morrissette went to work taking care of every batter for KVA, which left the contest scoreless heading into the second inning.
Burlington took the lead at the top of the second after obtaining two walks, one of which came after Lewis hit a Burlington batter. KVA continued to struggle with figuring out how to get past Morrissette and remained without any runs after two innings.
Despite failing to generate any momentum on the mound, the KVA outfield only allowed one run in the third quarter following a sacrifice fly from Burlington, which put them in a great position to get back in contention with Morissette being relieved at the bottom of the third.
The fourth inning proved to be disastrous for KVA, which ended up allowing five runs to give Burlington a sizable 8-0 lead. Several more runs and a grand slam from Burlington in the fifth capped off an efficient afternoon for Burlington, who only started to slip in the closing moments by allowing seniors Chance Murphy and Michael Holtzman to score for KVA.
Rigsbee said that Burlington’s pitching staff deserves tremendous credit for how Monday’s game unfolded. He knows that his players are disappointed with what is now their second loss of the season, but he hopes that they will be more prepared for another tough matchup with Greenfield.
“Basically, you have to tell them to block this out,” Rigsbee said. “You have to try and take something positive from this evening and move on. Greenfield’s got a decent team too, so we’ll see what happens.”
KVA travels to Wilson on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Greenfield as they try to improve to 3-2 on the year.
