Greensboro Day's season comes to an end

NEW YORK - Greensboro Day School's appearance in the Dicks Sporting Goods High School Nationals was a brief one.

Second-seeded Montverde (Fla.) Academy (29-1) got 20 points from University of Florida signee Noah Dickerson in a 50-34 win over GDS in the first round of the tournament on Thursday.

Peter Agba paced the Bengals (33-3) with 12 points. Darius Moore added nine.

Despite the loss, the trip meant a lot to the five seniors who led this team to a NCISAA Class 3-A championship and a No. 9 national ranking in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25. Agba, Trevor Mayo, Marquelle McIntyre, Moore and Paul Sprick all played roles in a season that was memorable even when the Bengals thought it had ended with a 44-34 win over rival Wesleyan on Feb. 28 in the state title game in Asheville.

"After that game, we didn't really know what to do," Moore said. "It was kind of …"

"Surreal," McIntyre said, completing the thought.

The Bengals were hoping to do something no team from North Carolina had done: Win a game in the tournament that pits eight of the country's top high school teams in an end-of-season tournament.

"For me, the most important thing is being out there one more time with my teammates," Sprick said. "We refer to ourselves as brothers and this is an amazing opportunity to play maybe three more games with them. This is something that we'll remember for the rest of our lives."

Freddy Johnson has seen 38 senior classes in his time as Greensboro Day's head coach.

"The difference with this class is they're special, a special group of kids," he said. "They do stuff together, on the weekends they all get together … at school, everywhere, they're always together. It's going to be fun to be up there with them."
