WCDS diamond 9 defeat Faith Christian, Greenville Christian
GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day launched its 2015 campaign with a 13-0 triumph of county foe Faith Christian and 3-1 conquest of Greenville Christian on Saturday.
Amane Godo delivered three hits and drove in two runs against Faith Christian. Mitch Turnage (two RBI), Parker Smith (RBI), John Strickland (two RBI), Patrick Hall (RBI), Drew Barnes (RBI) and Zach Barfield (two RBI) each provided a hit.
Strickland emerged as the winning pitcher. The returning starter held the Conquerors hitless and logged five strikeouts in a two-inning stint. Hall preserved the three-inning shutout with one inning of two-strikeout relief.
Officials halted the game after 21/2 innings.
A fake bunt and a smart running decision helped the Chargers upend Greenville Christian in the nightcap. Up 2-0 through two innings, WCDS added a third run when Strickland took third base with no one covering and the GCA defense threw the ball away into left field.
Turnage had a double in the game and surrendered one earned run on two hits, one walk and struck out four in two innings on the bump. Godo earned the save with three innings of no-hit, five-strikeout relief.
The Chargers (2-0 overall) return home today to face perennial independent 1-A powerhouse Lawrence Academy. First pitch is 4:30 p.m.
