Kris Wooten said signing to play basketball at Elon University wasn’t even a thought in his mind this time a year ago.

“If you had asked me if this was possible, I would have said no,” the Arendell Parrott senior said.

One year later, however, the 17-year-old Wooten finds playing college basketball a reality.

The 6-foot-3 Wooten on Monday signed a national letter of intent to play for NCAA Division I Elon of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Wooten said he also considered Wofford among others and that he also received offers from Penn and Fordham, but that Elon was where he wanted to go after he graduated high school.

“I felt comfortable with Elon’s system, I like the coaching staff and I fell in love with it there,” Wooten said. “I visited on September 29 and I really enjoyed it. That’s what makes this really special now. God has given me this opportunity.”

Wooten said he’s played basketball since he was 5. It’s what “I love to do,” he said.

So what kind of player will Elon get out of Wooten?

“Somebody who can really shoot the ball, play hard and play smart,” he said. “I feel like I can contribute to the team.”

Before he heads to college, however, Wooten has one more season at Parrott. The Patriots open the season Friday at St. David’s.

Wooten said he wanted to improve his defensive intensity and on his passing abilities. He added that the little things are important to his game this season as Parrott tries to improve on a 5-9 season from a year ago.

“I plan on scoring the ball a little better, getting more assists and rebounds,” Wooten said. “I’ve definitely loved playing here the last few years and I really look forward to our first game. We can be very good, but it depends on how hard we work.”
