The boys won 64-54, while the girls had no trouble in a 61-28 victory
Georges Lefebvre saw the baseline open. He took two dribbles and threw down a two-handed dunk.
The basket not only energized the Cape Fear Academy student section, but it was also key in helping the Hurricanes hold on for a 64-54 victory over Wilmington Christian Academy on Tuesday night.
“This is our home, so I had to do something to get the crowd back in it” said Lefebvre, who finished with 15 points.
CFA (2-1) led by 15 late in the third quarter, but a 12-0 run from the Patriots made it a one-possession game. Senior Conley Burk scored eight of his game-high 22 points during the spurt, including a layup with 4:19 remaining that cut the deficit to 53-50.
traveling call on Lafebvre gave the ball back to WCA (0-2), but David Puskas missed a tough shot and CFA cleared the rebound. On the other end, Matt Kiatipis hit a free throw and Ivan Misic put back a miss on the second attempt to increase the lead to six.
Following another WCA miss, Lefebvre threw down his dunk to all but seal the victory.
“I saw their was nobody in help, so when I got the ball in the corner I knew I could drive baseline” he said.
The victory was the 500th for longtime coach Tony Martin, who is in his second season with the Hurricanes.
Despite the loss, WCA coach Chris Staton was pleased with the way his team played despite only having four practices. The Patriots shot 42 percent from the field and committed only eight turnovers.
“I’m super excited about these guys,” Staton said. “We took care of the ball and got really good shots. It was fun.”
Grant Reed led CFA with 16 points and Misic chipped in with 13. Jordan Halloway finished with 14 points and Luke Chauvin added seven for WCA.
GIRLS: CFA 61, WCA 28
A 25-point second quarter helped the Hurricanes pull away and improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Led by a stifling full-court press, CFA forced 28 turnovers and turned them into 24 points. Sophomore Chloe Kernan led all scorers with 23 points on 11 of 19 shooting.
“It was our first home game and the girls were wired tight,” CFA coach Ray Beatty said. “Everybody was coming up short on their shots, so there were some nerves. Once they got settled, the defense led everything.”
Patricija Venckute added 15 for the Hurricanes, who shot 40 percent from the field.
WCA (0-1) was led offensively by Taylor Coble, who had 10 points. Caroline Leggett added nine.
