First-quarter defense foils WCA in loss to Cape Fear
Area roundup
From staff reports
WILMINGTON — Defensive lapses in the first quarter Thursday night placed the Wilson Christian varsity boys basketball team in a first-quarter hole it could never fully dig out of in a 81-66 non-conference loss at Cape Fear Academy.
Wilson Christian of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A District 3 ranks fell to 2-2 overall and trailed 26-15 after one quarter. The defensive intensity picked up thereafter and the Chargers were able to pull within five points in the third quarter, but could get no closer against the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A Coastal Rivers Conference Hurricanes.
“We just weren’t playing good defense,” Wilson Christian head coach Joel Attoe lamented. “We turned it up a little bit in the second quarter. We trimmed it to five points, but they pulled away again. We had a couple of lackluster up and downs. They definitely played hard, but just didn’t play hard enough on defense.
Senior Landin Boykin had 26 points for the Chargers, with classmate Jared Burrell bucketing 25 points. Burrell added five steals on defense. Senior post Adam Varnell pulled down six rebounds.
Grant Reed led five Cape Fear players in double figures with 22 points.
WCA travels to Greenville Christian on Friday night.
