Frederick, Gay hurl CBA past RMA 5-1

Pitching once again was the story for the C.B. Aycock varsity baseball team in the Golden Leaf Invitational as junior right-handers Luke Frederick and Jordan Gay combined on a two-hitter as the Golden Falcons defeated Rocky Mount Academy 5-1 in their tournament finale Tuesday morning in Fleming Stadium.

Frederick (3-1) started and went six innings, giving up one earned run on two hits — both in the first inning — while walking two and striking out eight. Gay pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out their 14th win in 19 games for the 3-A Golden Falcons of the 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference.

“Luke did a great job for us again today. I was very pleased with all of our pitching all three days,” CBA head coach Charles Davis said. “I’m a firm believer that if you pitch well and play defense you are always going to put yourself in position to win and that’s what we did.”

Indeed, the Falcons didn’t commit an error — and had just three in three games in the tourney — as they finished with a 2-1 mark in the Golden Leaf, losing only to tourney champion Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons. Conversely, the Eagles (10-7) of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A ranks made two errors, leading to three unearned runs off starting pitcher Reid Johnston, who has signed with North Carolina State University.

After Tyson Jones singled in Johnston for RMA’s only run in the top of the first, Aycock responded in the home half of the inning when Joey Hampton doubled with one out and scored on Blake Gipson’s single.

The Falcons took the lead in the second when Tyler Daniels drew a two-out walk and scored when Bradley Pate’s flyball to right field was misplayed. Chandler Matthews then singled in Pate.

Aycock added two more unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Hampton led CBA with a 3-for-4 day while Gipson was 2 for 4. Gipson and Carson Smitherman each had two of Aycock’s eight stolen bases.

The Falcons return to ECC play Tuesday, April 25, when they visit South Central.
