Another Gaston County basketball product has left for the private school ranks.
A key part of the Ashbrook girls basketball team’s undefeated run through Big South 3A a season ago will play elsewhere for the 2020-21 hoops campaign.
After spending each of the past two seasons at Ashbrook High, Zoey Ward has transferred to Concord Academy of the state Independent Schools Association (NCISAA), according to her mother Shameka Smith. She is expected to reclassify to the Class of 2023.
A starter since she arrived on campus, Ward averaged 15.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and just shy of two steals as a freshman. Though her numbers decreased in her second year at the varsity level with 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, she was credited by retired Ashbrook girls basketball coach Juan Smith for being more efficient despite a move to the block.
One thing that really helped was having (Smith as an Ashbrook assistant),” she said following the basketball season. “In high school, she played the same position I was changing to. She made the transition easier and taught me a few things to help me be successful.”
