SN blanked by Faith Christian
The Southern Nash High varsity baseball team ended its appearance in the fourth annual Golden Leaf Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Fike High’s Gilbert Ferrell Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Firebirds of the 3-A Big East Conference dropped to 12-8 in losing two of three Golden Leaf tests.
Faith Christian, a 1-A member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, finished 3-0 in the tournament and allowed but one run.
The Firebirds were on the verge of being victims of a no-hitter until Jason Montague singled in the sixth inning against Faith Christian left-hander Alex Crosby. Crosby, who kept Southern Nash batters off-balance with an assortment of off-speed pitches, hurled a one-hitter.
Southern Nash’s starting right-hander Trevor Mills allowed but four hits and one run in a five-inning stint. Mills issued three walks and struck out eight.
The game was scoreless until Faith Christian pushed across a run in the top of the fourth. The victors nicked Southern Nash reliever Jason Johnson for a run in each of the last two innings.
Firebirds head coach Todd Brewer termed the Golden Leaf a “good experience.”
“We would have liked to have won more than one game,” he assured, “but we played three tough teams. We had a big win Saturday against North Johnston and we played a tough game against Rosewood, which is one of the better 1-A teams. We lost that one (10-9) on kind of a fluke play. And Faith Christian is one of the top private-school teams.”
Southern Nash returns to conference play when it observes Senior Night against second-place Rocky Mount at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25.
