The mental aspects of baseball, in the opinion of Wilson Christian head coach Ty Bissett, strayed from his Chargers during their final game of the Golden Leaf Invitational on Tuesday at Hunt High’s Sid Boyette Field.
Facing a quartet of pitchers from Rocky Mount Faith Christian, the Chargers were held to just three hits, while the Patriots executed a 13-hit attack on the way to a 10-1 victory.
Wilson Christian dropped to 6-3-1 and wrapped up tournament play with a 1-2 record. Faith Christian improved to 9-3 in all games, ending with a 2-1 record in tournament play.
The Patriots reached Wilson Christian senior right-hander Brandon Krob for three runs in the top of the third. Luke Mills, who was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, tripled down the left-field line for the game’s first run. Faith Christian tacked on two runs in the fourth and put it out of reach with a five-run sixth.
WCA plated its only run in the fourth against winning pitcher Sam Mills on a groundout by freshman Brice Murray.
Trailing 5-1 in the fifth, the Chargers tried to grab momentum following an 11-pitch at-bat from junior Austin Holland that ended with a walk. Following two strikeouts, senior Brad Batten singled into center field, but Holland, who had previously stolen second base, hesitated rounding third. He was easily thrown out at the plate for the final out.
Junior Will Whitley was the only Charger with multiple hits.
