A 25-5 run to start Thursday’s game allowed Gaston Day to run away with a 78-36 win in its opener over Lake Pointe Academy.
“Clearly our guys were excited for the opportunity to play,” said Gaston Day basketball coach Trent McCallister. “We had really good energy early, made some shots and you start building a lead like that. We played with great energy and I was mighty proud of their effort.”
Gaston Day held a 37-point lead at halftime. Nine Spartans scored, with four reaching double figures.
Callum Richard led the way with 17 points as Chris Britt added 16 of his own. Dean Hunter and Colin Fayed had 12 points and 10 points, respectively, in a winning effort.
Cale Newby was the only player to score in double figures for Lake Pointe Academy with 16.
Gaston Day returns to the floor Saturday when it hosts the South Charlotte Thunder at 2 p.m.
