APA's comeback falls short against Harrells Christian in slugfest
Arendell Parrott nearly pulled off an impressive comeback, but couldn’t finish the task
The Patriots fell to Harrells Christian in a 17-14 slugfest Tuesday. The Crusaders (4-5) lost their season opener to APA (6-4) 6-3, but exacted revenge by recovering from what was initially looking like an easy win.
Harrells Christian scored six in the top of the sixth to take a 13-4 lead, but APA responded with nine in the bottom of the frame to tie it up. In the top of the seventh, Ethan Spell hit a sacrifice fly, followed by a 2-run single by Jaiden Stallings and an RBI double from Noah Tart to seemingly put Harrells Christian in a good position up 17-13.
In the bottom of the frame, the Patriots loaded the bases with nobody out as Hodges Manning and Taylor Llewellyn were hit by pitches, along with R.J. Cummings drawing a walk. Jojo Ferebee got a sacrifice fly to close the gap to three, but APA couldn’t get closer.
“Coach (Robert) Kravitz has a very young team, I have a pretty young team, and both of us played like we were young defensively,” Harrells Christian coach Winfred Johnson said. “We both hit the ball well — a hard wind blowing out always makes for bloop hits and outfielders have to play deep. They got seven or eight bloop hits, we got nine or 10, and that was probably the big difference.”
Kravitz said he appreciated the team’s resolve, but have to clean up in other areas.
“I told them ‘if you give up 17 runs, you’re never going to win a baseball game,’” Kravitz said. “Still, the fact that we were down so big and kept battling, that showed a lot of grit and character.”
APA travels to Coastal Christian Thursday.
