Saturday afternoon baseball looked good for Arendell Parrott.
The Patriots defeated Virginia Episcopal 4-0 behind a strong performance on the mound from Garrett Byrd and a good first inning offensively. As a result, APA is now 6-1-1 on the season with an unbeaten streak of four.
“I thought Garrett pitched a great game for us and we hit the ball well,” APA coach Robert Kravitz said. “Our approach at the plate was great, and so was the defense. Overall, I’m very satisfied with our performance.”
The Patriots had a two-run rally in the bottom of the first, starting with a Hunter Pope walk. Byrd hit an infield single before APA executed a double steal to open up the scoring. The next batter, Cole Smith, blasted one out of the park for a 2-run homer and 3-0 Patriots lead.
“I had two balls and no strikes, so I knew it was coming right down the middle,” Smith said. “I just swung for the fence and got a hold of it.”
It was all Byrd needed as he threw six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 and leaving the Bishops (0-4) off balance all game. APA threw in an insurance run with a Caleb Sanderson RBI single in the fourth.
“I just had to lock in and throw strikes,” Byrd said.
